Preamble

This course is intended to equip participants with both specialized knowledge and practical skills in participatory Project Planning, Monitoring and Impact Assessment with the view of improving their strategic-thinking and decision making skills when managing development projects and responding to development challenges under globalized environment.

Target Group

This course is intended for Executive Directors, Planning Officers, Economists of Local Government Authorities (Townships, Districts, Municipalities and Cities), Heads of Departments and Sections, Project Managers and Coordinators, Field Officers and Functional Managers from Government and Non-Government Organization.

Introduction
• Objective setting: sharing our expectations
• Defining our terms : Project / Participatory/ Planning and management
• Experience sharing/problem solving

Project management and Participatory development
• Overview of Project Management and Project Life Cycle (PLC)
• Overview of Participatory development philosophies and approaches
• So how does that “fit’ together??? ( small group exercise)

Participatory Project Inception and design
• How to build on people’s wish for change (initiating)
• How to ensure collective contributions
• How to identify resources needed: existing skills and assets, external input
(planning)

Key elements of a Project Plan
• Description; Confirmation; Tracking
• Constructing the action plan on existing assets
• Team exercise
• Assignment

Participatory Project Implementation
• Keeping people’s agency at the heart of the action
• Identifying risks, alleviating them

Managing the action while keeping participation
• Managing resources: human, in-kind, financial
• Some tools, methodologies / case study

Project Follow-up and monitoring
• Strategies for ongoing participatory assessment
• Tracking Changes, Confirming plan
• When Change is needed: adjusting the course of action

In situation during a monitoring visit (role play)
• Discussion – Checking in
• Work on assignment

Participatory Project Evaluation
• Why do a Project evaluation?
• Evaluate what and for whom: accountability vs learning
• Revisiting the Change expected

Learning and communications
• How to frame and use the learning
• Reporting and Communicating about the project

  1. Fees Payment - All fees are payable strictly in advance 2 working days before the course starting date.
  2. Cancellation Fee - Cancellation of any participant 5 working days before the start day of a course will incur a 20% cancellation fee.
    We regret that no cancellations will be accepted within 2 working days of a course, but substitutions may be made.
